C1785 Queen Marie Antoinette France Hand Painted Porcelaine Case
C1785 Queen Marie Antoinette France Hand Painted Porcelaine Case. A stunning and exceedingly rare French Hard Paste Porcelain and gilt bronze mounted case, beautifully decorated with flowers and gilding, and sporting the Royal Cypher of Queen Marie Antoinette. It is made by the Paris Porcelaine factory of André Marie Leboeuf, which was established in 1778. As was typical of the small paris factories, the company only survived thanks to Royal Patronage, in this case, by Marie Antoinette.
For this reason, the company was also referred to, at the time, as'Porcelaine de la Reine' (Porcelain of the Queen). The company produced well decorated and highly finished porcelain, mostly table services, jardinieres and such pieces in the character of late Sevres china.
The mark was an A under a crown, stencilled in red. The fortunes of the factory were linked to the fortune of the Queen and all production of her wares ceased with the commencement of the French Revolution and her later execution. The case has a broadly oval shape, with a gilt bronze hinged edge to both halves. The quality of the detail is superb, with fine colours and heavy gilding. On the underside is the painted red crown surmounting the capital A.
There is also a small paper catalogue collection label and some indistinct writing in pencil. The condition is very good, with little or no wear to the decoration.
