Chinese grisaille'European Subject' bowl, c. 1750, Qianlong (1736-95), with foliate rim, decorated in the centre with a courting lady and gallant in European dress seated beneath a tree, with a further amorous couple in a thicket in the background, the inner rim with Dutch over-painted sprays of flowers and fruiting branches. Diameter of saucer: 5 7/8in.
Condition: two hairlines with associated chips to rim, fritting to rim, star-crack to base. The design fort his set is though to be based upon an engraving by Jean-Baptiste Pater, perhaps a preparatory work for'L'Amour et le Badinage'.
