Antique Chinese Ovid pillow with bats & sages. 19 th or early 20 th century. Ceramic pillows such as this were used in the Song Dynasty and I suspect that this is a replica of one. There are obvious copies that I have seen, and I have seen others in the same style as this, that are less so.I think this is this category. It's decorative and interior design piece. There is evidence and remnants seen of an impressed seal on the bottom, but is in-distinct.
Two boys support the pillow. There is a painting of sages or immortals over a cauldron with 5 bats (4 on the sides and one on top), that bring health, long life, prosperity, love of virtue and a tranquil natural death.
There are 4 bats in the reticulated pattern There are also impasto glaze to pick out flowers on the top and the sides. There are many who say they were used in opium dens, but there is no where they could put their valuables in it while they slept.
