Antique Sevres French Ormolu Bronze Porcelain Lidded Potpourri Box Hand Painted
Antique Gorgeous Sevres porcelain potpourri covered bowl with gilt bronze mounts and hand painted scene on the lid of a young couple courting and the other side a painted panel of the French countryside. Gilt painted swirls and stylize leaves and a rose in full bloom with a couple buds and leaves on the bottom interior. Beautiful ornate and detailed ormolu with a stylized pineapple finial. Floral ornaments inside of the lid and inside the bowl. Bottom of the bowl is stamped with Sevres mark accompanied with "CHATEAU DES TUILERIES" stamp. Excellent condition with perhaps some slight gilt loss but no chips or cracks to the creamy soft pink colored porcelain body. It measures about 7 " wide at the handles and 6/5" tall to top of finial. This beautiful piece was imported from France and retailed by Ovington Brothers of New York and Chicago.
In the mid-1800s the Ovington brothers had trade in sculpture, ceramics, pottery, and table ware. They quickly expanded to a new two-story building which spanned several storefronts on Fulton Street, which was at the edge of the downtown shopping district.
This fine store would stock some of the more refined examples of porcelain and china one could obtain, mostly imported from Europe by manufactures such as Sevres, Minton, Cauldon and more.
