BEAUTIFUL 100% HAND PAINTED RED POPPIES STOUFFER 5 PIECE PORCELAIN TEA SET. This is stunningly beautiful antique set in great original condition; an elegant five (5) piece porcelain tea set decorated with 100% hand painted red poppies, green leaves and black and gold trim on a variegated lustre (mother-of-pearl) background. There was not sufficient space to allow for photos of both sides of the three major pieces, so I will tell you that both sides of each of the three major pieces are basically identical to what is pictured. This set was produced circa 1910 by the J. Stouffer Company, formerly of Chicago, Illinois, which was a contemporary of The Pickard Company. The hand-painting on this set is just stunning and incredibly colorful. In the Pickard book mentioned below, on plate # 802 a teapot is pictured that appears to be in this same decorating pattern (and the same blank shape) and the pattern is described as ISOLDE. This set has been in my personal collection since 1990. The underside of the three large pieces of this set are all stamped in red overglaze: Hand Painted Stouffer. According to the book Collectors Encyclopedia of Pickard China by Alan B. Reed this is one of the marks used by the J. Stouffer Company, formerly of Chicago, Illinois, and was in use there between 1906 and 1914. This same mark is pictured in this book as Mark 4 on page 281 of this book. All three are also signed with a green underglaze mark J & C with a flower logo (there is also a word underneath this that may be Isolde). A ccording the book Marks on German, Bohemian and Austrian Porcelain 1710 to the Present by Robert E.

Rontgen this mark (pictured on page 78 of this book as Mark 405) was used after 1902 and was the mark of the Jaeger & Co. Formerly of Marktredwitz, Germany (Bavaria). This is the firm that actually produced the porcelain blanks. Interestingly, on the creamer there is also an intact paper label for the original retailer of the set and it reads John W.

Mather Jeweler, 405 Market Street, Parkersburg, W. I also found an artists signature on the teapot, near the upper edge of the bottom of the handle, that appears to read A. This is one of the artists names listed in the above Pickard book on page 280 as one of the decorators for Stouffer.

This is an exquisite set and very beautiful as you can see from the photos! I do my best to describe all items as accurately as possible and to the best of my ability. Some of my photos may be somewhat lighter or darker than actual to better show detail or color. However, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, or with requests for additional pictures. Our store has many unique and interesting items in several different categories from 35 years of our dealing and collecting antiques and collectables. This set dates to circa 1910.

It is in incredible near mint original condition. Please look closely at the photos as they are an important part of my description of this item.

Everything rings like a bell when I tap it with my ring and I checked each piece over carefully with a blacklight and found no evidence of damage or repair. The gold all appears to me to be in very near mint condition - see the photos. There are no chips, flea bites, cracks, hairlines, crazing or repairs to any of the porcelain. Anything else you think you see is a reflection in the photos. Please keep in mind these photos may be blown up at least 8-10 times normal, so anything you see will look 8-10 times larger in the photos than it really is.

Please note: if you see a dark spot in the photos it is from my camera and is not a mark on the piece. It will be either just to the right of center towards the bottom or slightly above center on the right side of the photo.

The teapot is about 8.25 (21 cm) from the end of the handle to the tip of the spout by about 4.75 (12.1 cm) in diameter at the widest point and sits about 6.75 (17.1 cm) off the table at the top of the finial. The creamer is about 4.375 (11.1 cm) from the end of the handle to the tip of the spout by about 3.25 (8.3 cm) in diameter at the widest point and sits about 3.25 (8.3 cm) off the table at the tip of the spout. The sugar is about 6.125 (15.6 cm) across the handles by about 4.625 (10.2 cm) in diameter at the widest point and sits about 4 (10.2 cm) off the table at the top of the finial.

About 2 pounds 7.125 ounces (1.111 kilograms) for the set. On heavier items I will also offer a less expensive option, if available.
