Stunning Hand-Painted Porcelain Meiji Japanese Imari Vase with lid Mid 19th Century. This stunning mid 19th Century Imari Vase with lid is decorated in the traditional palette with floral and landscape panels on a rust red flowerhead ground. The piece is decorated in two large panel and two small panel designs. The two opposing large panels depict a bird, most like a heron with wings splayed out, over an orange and gold flowering plant with green leaves with a green foreground and blue water. The smaller opposing panels consist of bushes with a variety of blue petaled flowers with golden centre surrounding a central red and green flower design. The panels are surrounded by flowers and lots of red foliage. The lid mimics the vase in decoration.

Imari is most commonly unmarked. Makers and artists names occur along with generic details on some items. As the Imari name was a Western construct it is not found (or exceptionally rarely found) on genuine items from the period.

Also found as marks are naturalistic devices such as a leaves and Buddhist symbols. There are no chips or cracks in either the lid or vase. The colours are vivid and bright and overall its in excellent condition.

I have deliberately not cleaned this item. My step-mother was a natural wonder. She hailed from France but travelled the world and for a while worked in the film industry where she met my father. Over her lifetime she acquired a wonderful collection of folk & ethnic vintage jewellery as well as a collection of late 19th century Moroccan and Middle Eastern furniture. Sadly she passed away in 2019 and then my father followed her in 2021. My wife and I have held onto all these items but have concluded that its time to sell them on to someone who will wear and treasure them once again.
